Who we are

Untype is a voice-typing app — a desktop app for Windows and a keyboard for Android — operated by UNTYPED LTD, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17304854), with its registered office at 178 Bury Street, London N9 9LQ. For privacy purposes, we are the "data controller" responsible for your information. You can reach us any time at hello@untype.org.

What we collect

Account details

Your email address. Sign-in is passwordless — instead of a password, we email you a secure one-time link to sign in, so there's no password for us to store.

Payment details

Handled entirely by our payment provider, Stripe. We never see or store your card number; we only keep a reference that lets Stripe charge your saved card.

Your voice

When you start voice typing — the dictation shortcut on Windows, or the microphone on the Untype keyboard on Android — the app records your speech and sends it away to be turned into text (see below). We do not store your audio or the text it produces.

Your typing

On the Android keyboard, the words you type and the vocabulary it learns to improve your autocorrect stay on your device. They are never sent to us, and we do not receive or store them.

Usage totals

The amount of dictation you use each month, so we can bill you correctly.

Basic technical data

Our hosting provider (Cloudflare) automatically processes connection data such as IP address to keep the service secure.

How we use your voice

To turn your speech into text, the app sends your audio to OpenAI (based in the United States). OpenAI converts it to text and sends it back. Under OpenAI's API terms, your audio is not used to train its models. We do not keep the audio or the transcript on our systems once you have your text.

Who we share data with

We only share what's needed to run the service, with:

OpenAI (USA)

To transcribe your speech.

Stripe

To process payments.

Cloudflare

To host and secure the service.

Sending data outside the UK

Your audio is processed by OpenAI in the United States. This transfer is protected by the standard data-protection safeguards in OpenAI's data processing terms.

How long we keep it

Audio and transcripts — not kept at all.

Account and billing records — kept while your account is active, and afterwards only as long as the law requires (for example, UK tax rules require us to keep financial records for 6 years).

Your rights

You have the right to see the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or object to how we use it. To exercise any of these, just email us — see How to contact us below.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account and personal data at any time. In the app, open Settings → Manage account and choose Delete account, or follow the steps at untype.org/delete-account. This immediately erases your account, email, preferences, sign-in tokens and usage totals, and your customer record with Stripe. We keep only the past payment records that UK tax law requires us to retain (about 6 years), after which they too are deleted.

Cookies

We use a single sign-in cookie to keep you logged in to your account page. We don't use tracking or advertising cookies.

Bot protection

We use Cloudflare Turnstile on our sign-up and login pages to tell real people apart from automated bots. It runs a silent background check rather than asking you to solve a puzzle. Your use of Turnstile is subject to Cloudflare's Turnstile Privacy Addendum.

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top and post the new version on this page.

How to contact us
