What we hold, and what we never do
What you write never leaves your device. The words your keyboard learns are shared between your own devices and nowhere else. Your audio is transcribed and not kept, nothing is sold on, and there are no ads.

Who we are
Untype is a voice-typing app — a keyboard for Android and iPhone, and an app for Windows and Mac — operated by UNTYPED LTD, a company registered in England and Wales, company number 17304854. For privacy purposes we are the data controller responsible for your information, and you can reach us at hello@untype.org at any time.
What we collect
- Your email
- Sign-in is passwordless — we email you a one-time link instead, so there is no password for us to store.
- Payment details
- Handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your card number, only a reference that lets Stripe charge the card you saved.
- Your voice
- While you dictate, the app records your speech and sends it away to be turned into text. We do not store the audio or the text it produces.
- On iPhone, so you can dictate one sentence after another, the microphone stays available for 30 seconds after you finish a sentence, including in the background. iOS shows an indicator whenever it is live, and nothing is recorded or sent unless you start a sentence.
- Your typing
- What you write stays on your device — we do not receive or store it. The vocabulary your keyboard learns is shared between your own devices through your account, so each one knows what the others learned. Words only, never what you wrote, and never shared with anyone else.
- Usage totals
- How much dictation you use each month, so we can bill you correctly.
- Technical data
- Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, automatically processes connection data such as your IP address to keep the service secure.
What leaves your device
One thing: the audio you dictate. To turn your speech into text, the app sends it to OpenAI, based in the United States, which converts it and sends the text back. Under OpenAI's API terms your audio is not used to train its models, and this transfer outside the UK is covered by the standard data-protection safeguards in OpenAI's data processing terms.
Once you have your text, neither the audio nor the transcript is kept on our systems. Nothing else is transmitted, nothing is sold on, and there are no ads.

- While your account is active, and afterwards only as long as the law requires — UK tax rules mean financial records are kept for 6 years.
Your rights
You can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or object to how we use it. To exercise any of these, email us — see How to contact us below.
Deleting your account
At any time, from the app or by emailing us. Deletion immediately erases your account, email, preferences, sign-in tokens and usage totals, along with your customer record at Stripe. We keep only the past payment records UK tax law requires — about 6 years — after which they are deleted too. How to do it.
